Having recently spent a couple of hours with my small grandchildren on a restored Delaware Bay Oyster Schooner, I’ve been reminded just how appreciative the folk of the US eastern seaboard are of gaff rigged working boats.
In Connecticut, Mystic has the beautiful ‘L A Dunton‘, New York has the ‘Pioneer‘, Massachusetts has the ‘Ernestina‘ and New Jersey has the ‘A J Meerwald‘. Not forgetting Maine and Rhode Island, of course, and there’s a coastal stretch of New Hampshire up there as well, including its very own Portsmouth.
It occurs to me that of the hundreds of emails I’ve received via these Tilman web pages over the past eighteen years, almost half of them have come from climbing and sailing ‘Tilman enthusiasts’ in the USA.
So, it seems obvious to me that I should head over and take the ‘Travels with Tilman‘ talk for a road trip. Sail Martha’s Vineyard have already expressed enthusiasm for such a venture so the planning starts now.
Ideally, I’d like to set up half a dozen dates within a 2-3 week timeframe during the winter season 2018-2019. If you know an organisation that might be interested in hosting an ‘Evening with Tilman’ anywhere between New Jersey and Maine, please get in touch.
